Hector was a progressive farmer. Although he had little
formal education he could figure out most farm problems; he could repair
his equipment - tractors, cars, trucks, farm machinery. He could build
his granaries knowing what he needed for the results of this harvest.
He did his own plumbing to have running water in the house. He did the
wiring in the house when electricity became available in 1947. He had
previously devised a power system with a windmill on top of the house
connected to batteries. He planted trees around the farmstead for a
shelterbelt against the winter storms. He designed his own retirement
home on the farm. He and Olive enabled Donald and Hector to start farming.
They helped Niel, Elaine and Jean to get education so that they could
be independent. Education was important to them – for girls as
well as boys. They felt that this was the way to independence.
With the start of World War II the price of farm produce
increased. Farm machinery was changing – tractors became common,
field equipment was larger. The size of the farm was increased to include
the north half of the section and the half section south of the farm
was added.
While they worked hard on the farm they had time to
be involved in the community. Hector was a trustee for the Moore Park
School from 1943 to 1950. He was a councillor for the Municipality of
Odanah for many years. Hector continued to play with his band for many
years. He was a charter member of the local Pool Elevator, President
of the Community Club, member of the B.P.O. Elks and involved in the
Game and Fish Association. He was an active sportsman and conservationist.
Sport fishing was his favorite activity during his later life. Olive’s
work decreased as the children grew older. She became more active in
the community. She was an active member of the local Women’s Institute
and served as treasurer for many years. She enjoyed sewing and handicrafts.
She made clothes for her children, including mitts from tanned deer
hide (which Hector had killed for meat for the family). She submitted
articles of her craftwork to the Minnedosa Fair and won many prizes
for her quilts. She made over 100 quilts – giving them to her
children and grandchildren.
Although Hector and Olive increasingly did less farm
work after 1966, they continued to be involved in the activities of
the farm. Hector died Oct. 21, 1980 at 80 years of age. Olive died April
9, 1985. She was 77 years old.
