My father, Hector Macdonald Cameron, was born of Scottish parents in England. Although he and his family immigrated to Canada when he was six years old, it was his Scottish roots that he chose to talk about.
Over the years I became curious about those roots.
- Just who were the Camerons and why did they come to Canada?
- What circumstances greeted them when they finally settled on a farm in Manitoba?
- What was it like for those of us who were born and raised there?

In 1980-81, while living in Edinburgh, Scotland I began to seriously research my roots. I visited Register House many times during the year. I placed a letter in the Kilmarnock newspaper. Through that letter I found Ellen Strawhorn (a cousin to my father) and Charles and Cecily Cameron in Brisbane, Australia. Over the following years we have shared information and have become friends. I have talked with family members for stories. Hector Cameron, my brother, has been an encouragement – he listened to the stories our father told of earlier times. Thanks to all who have helped me.
Genealogy seems to have no end in sight. The more you search, the greater the family tree grows. While the quest is not over, I think it is time to put together some of what I have discovered and share it with my family.
I have enjoyed the search and I hope that you will find it of some interest.
