Andrew married Martha Cochrane Speirs on December
9, 1885 at Lochlee, Tarbolton, Ayrshire.
(Lochlee is where Robert Burns lived a century earlier) Martha was born
at Shortlees, Riccarton on October 29, 1862, and the eldest child of William Speirs and Margaret Smith Lamont.
Andrew was 28 years old and Martha was 23 years old.
They began farming at Burnhead Farm (a farm of about 70 acres). This
is where their first two children were born – James and Maggie.
In 1889 the family moved to Leicestershire, England.
In the Weekly Supplement & Advertiser for Galston, Newmilns &
Darvel, on page 3 dated 12/4/1889, was the following:

GALSTON - December 4, 1889 |
Presentation. – On Friday evening last
a number of friends waited on Mr. Andrew Cameron,
who is about to leave Burnhead Farm for Liecestershire, and, after
enjoying Mr. and Mrs. Cameron’s hospitality, Mr. Thos. Johnston,
Galston, in a few neat and appropriate remarks, presented him, in
name of the subscribers, with a marble timepiece, bearing the following
inscription:
“Presented to Mr.
Andrew Cameron, farmer, Burnhead, along with a brooch to Mrs. Cameron,
by a few friends, on the occasion of his leaving the district for
England.”
Mr. Cameron briefly but feelingly replied, after
which, with song and sentiment, a few hours were spent very pleasantly
together. |
