Andrew
Cameron was born August 20, 1857 at Knowe –
the eleventh child in the family of twelve children. In 1861, according
to the census, Andrew was living at Knowe. However, in 1871 he was not
there. James died on April 1, 1871. By 1881 Matthew (an older brother)
and his wife Jane Leiper Lindsay had taken over Knowe and Agnes, with
John and Andrew, were living with her mother (Mary Bryson) at Molemountend
(a farm of 70 acres). Andrew won a ploughing match that year at the
Agricultural Fair. Agnes died Sept. 13, 1891 at East Overland Farm,
Hurlford, at the home of her youngest daughter, Jessie Strawhorn.
James and Agnes had written their will on July 18, 1867,
with a codicil written on Nov. 24, 1869. They willed Knowe to James (not their eldest son. This is a break from custom – the eldest
son was usually the inheritor of the home farm. Matthew and Andrew were to get the ninety-six falls of land
in the Temple Lands of Darvel, provided they gave Agnes a yearly annuity of ten pounds. George Cameron would
get a piece of land in Greenholm. John and James would
get a Legacy of 300 Pounds, Helen and Jessie 160 Pounds. Mary and Agnes
were to receive 100 Pounds (Mary and Agnes had received 60 Pounds when
they married). James and John were to pay an annuity to Agnes for life,
if she survived James. Matthew Cameron of Chanque, William, James and
Matthew (sons of James and Agnes) were named Trustees.
In a codicil
written on Nov. 24, 1869 – John Cameron who has a lease of the
farm of Molemountend has a choice of the stock on the farm or the above
Legacy of 300 Pounds. The inventory of the estate of James and Agnes
at the time of his death was 2,234 Pounds, 3 Shillings and 5 Pence.
Why was Andrew not given
a Legacy, as were the other children?
Did he receive a share of
the estate at the death of James.
We will never know the answer to these questions. When
Agnes died she had 80 Pounds, 19 Shillings and 9 Pence.

Andrew married Martha Cochrane Speirs on December
9, 1885 at Lochlee, Tarbolton, Ayrshire.
(Lochlee is where Robert Burns lived a century earlier) Martha was born
at Shortlees, Riccarton on October 29, 1862, and the eldest child of William Speirs and Margaret Smith Lamont.
Andrew was 28 years old and Martha was 23 years old.
They began farming at Burnhead Farm (a farm of about 70 acres). This
is where their first two children were born – James and Maggie.
In 1889 the family moved to Leicestershire, England.
In the Weekly Supplement & Advertiser for Galston, Newmilns &
Darvel, on page 3 dated 12/4/1889, was the following:
Weekly
Supplement & Advertiser for Galston, Newmilns & Darvel
GALSTON - December 4, 1889 |
Presentation. – On Friday evening last
a number of friends waited on Mr. Andrew Cameron,
who is about to leave Burnhead Farm for Liecestershire, and, after
enjoying Mr. and Mrs. Cameron’s hospitality, Mr. Thos. Johnston,
Galston, in a few neat and appropriate remarks, presented him, in
name of the subscribers, with a marble timepiece, bearing the following
inscription:
“Presented to Mr.
Andrew Cameron, farmer, Burnhead, along with a brooch to Mrs. Cameron,
by a few friends, on the occasion of his leaving the district for
England.”
Mr. Cameron briefly but feelingly replied, after
which, with song and sentiment, a few hours were spent very pleasantly
together. |
